Someday, Houston fans will watch the Conference Championship games with more than detached interest. There may be an actual rooting equity for the Houston fans, and dare I say it, the chance to end the night with the greatest pro football achievement in Houston history. Given the struggles of the offensive line and the offense overall, few professed that much , the announcement that team president Greg Grissom and the Houston Texans parted ways on Thursday caught many off-guard. For a man whos been with the organization since the beginning and oversaw so many of the business aspects of the franchise, it does seem rather odd to leave when the team is on a major upswing. The back story remains incomplete. Perhaps the team wanted to go in a different business direction, with rumors about the McNairs pushing for a new stadium floating on the interwebs. Or, after nearly 25 years of service, Grissom wanted to do something different. Tomons resume includes his stint at Legends, where he worked business deals for many international football/soccer clubs, the NFL and international competitions. Klint Kubiak was thought to be a prime contender, but as of Sunday night, he left New Orleans to run the offense in Seattle. At this point, the next offensive line coach and offensive staff rests on that one move. Given that the offense was the weakest link on the team, even with C.J. Stroud, Nico Collins and Joe Mixon, this hire is the biggest for the squad. The decision is expected by this by Jamie Squire/Getty Images About the Conference Title Games: By now, we are all coming to grips with a Super Bowl rematch between the Kansas City Swifties Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles and their barbarian fanbase. The Chiefs look to be the first NFL organization to win three consecutive Super Bowls and the first three-peat champion since the last of the Lombardi-era Green Bay Packers in the mid-1960s. The Eagles look to shake the label of being the only NFC East team without multiple Super Bowls. Sure, the usual stars on the Chiefswill be there, and the Eagles bring some star power of their own, mainly Saquon Barkley. However, this author suspects that most non-Philly/Kansas City fans will root for the meteor. Yet, even as Houston must once again watch someone else go for the glory, Houston can take a few things from the victorious teams. The value of quality running backs. It appears that Barkley will rate among the best free agent signings of all time, as he put up over 2, 000 yards rushing in the regular season and added over 300+ yards in the playoffs. The Chiefs got Isiah Pacheco back from injury and along with Kareem Hunt, that help power them to another Super Bowl. Houston got a quality season from Joe Mixon, showing how a running game still matters in this league. Have a strong defense. Philly and Kansas City boast perhaps the best defenses in the league this past season C.J. Gardner-Johnson Jersey, and it showed in the playoffs. In their matchups against Kansas City, Houstons defense proved no slouch, and if not for the struggles of the offense or special teams, perhaps Houston wins that matchup against Kansas City. Leveraging playoff experience and making the big plays when they must count. This is where Houston still has some work to do. They have the talent to match the top teams, but they cant seem to make the big play on the big stage either on offense or defense. In 2023, they were ahead of schedule, and thus, perhaps not truly ready to face down Baltimore in the playoffs. While they struggled in 2024, for at least three quarters in Kansas City, they more than held their own. Yet, Houston wants more than just hanging with the big dogs, they want to be one of the big dogs. Unfortunately, they will have to clean up a lot of execution to get there. Kansas City, meet Houston: Many a Texans fan resents the continued success of the Chiefs, who always seem to have all of the breaks and plays go their way. If luck is with those who dont need it, Kansas City is overburdened with it. Mahomes is now playing for history, as are Reid and Kelce. Yet, the once-feel good story is souring fast, and the resentment is hard to hide. However, Houstonians cant be too shocked or surprised to see how this played out. Consider the Houston Astros, who, until this past season, logged seven straight ALCS appearances, four pennants and two titles. Everyone got tired of them too, at least outside of Houston. Accusations of less-than-fair-playdominate the narrative, however unfair or overblown. The Super Bowl is in two weeks, but it would not surprise this author if the ratings are actually somewhat down for the game.
